My people/animal cake toppers are hand made to order, usually from an inedible modelling paste* which allows for very detailed figures. They sit on top of the cake on their own food-grade acrylic stand, so you can keep them as a lasting memento of the occasion. They're very strong once dry, and will last indefinitely.

*If the design of your cake requires the topper to be in direct contact with the cake, then it will need to be made in sugarpaste. However, this will make it more fragile, plus it won't be on its own base - so these toppers may not be so suitable for keeping afterwards.
